History of the Royal Concert Hall
In the core of Glasgow, you will find the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. It is one of Scotland’s most prized venues hosting an array of musical genres including rock, pop, jazz, folk and classical. Opened in 1990 as the Glasgow International Concert Hall by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, the venue was intended to be a replacement for St. Andrew’s Hall which was destroyed in a fire in 1962.
That year Glasgow was awarded the European City of Culture Award and as a showpiece, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra performed the very first show at the Royal Gala Opening Concert. It was eventually granted Royal Status and named the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.
This famed venue has welcomed many well respected and legendary acts over the years including Johnny Cash, Van Morrison, BB King, Debbie Harry and Ray LaMontagne. As the home of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, it has hosted many international orchestras including the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
As well as musical performances, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall hosts an array of shows that include musical theatre, ballet, comedy and talks. It is also used for graduation ceremonies for the likes of Glasgow Caledonian University.
Inside the Royal Concert Hall
The hall puts on nearly 250 performances every year entertaining a variety of audiences within several spaces inside the building. The largest performance space is the Main Auditorium which seats 2475 people.
There are 6 spaces within the building which include the Exhibition Hall which hosts 300 people, the Lomond and Clyde foyers with a 300-person capacity and the Strathclyde Suite which caters for up to 500. The spaces’ capacity ranges from 40 to over 2000 people.
