    History of Celtic Connections

The festival started in 1994 with the aim of promoting traditional Scottish folk music. It also samples flavours of international folk, roots and world music artists. Not only is the Gaelic language heavily influenced throughout, but the native languages of other Celtic nations have been showcased as well as performances in the English language. The education of children has also prevalent throughout the duration of the festival with the creation of a designated Education Programme which sees new and young talent fostered through its popular Young Tradition and new Voices series of concerts.

The main venue is the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, where performances take place in every space, from workshops in the foyers, to performances by world-class artists in the Main Arena. The majority of the events have been held here over the years and at various venues across the city from the west end’s Oran Mor to the City Halls and Drygate Brewery in the east. In recent years the festival has grown in audience figures and the number of events to now sell out the 12,000 capacity SSE Hydro.
