Glasgow Travel Information
Glasgow is one of the liveliest and most cosmopolitan destinations in Europe, reborn as a centre of style, vitality and culture set against a backdrop of outstanding architecture dominated by spires and towers. Glasgow boasts world famous art collections, the best shopping in the United Kingdom outside London, and the most vibrant nightlife in Scotland. Small wonder it is now the venue of choice for many international conferences & meetings especially with its state of he art conference and meeting facility.
Long described as “Britain’s finest Victorian city”, Glasgow’s history abounds with entrepreneurial spirit and commerce. The fortunes made from transatlantic trade in the 18th century led to the construction of the magnificent buildings that are the hallmark of the city today. However, it is the Art Nouveau “Glasgow Style” for which the city has become most famous and no visitor should miss seeing the work of Glasgow’s most celebrated architect and designer, Charles Rennie Macintosh. His ground-breaking work can be seen at Glasgow School of Art, The Hunterian Museum, House for an Art Lover and his story is told inside another of his buildings – The Lighthouse, now a design centre.
Visitors can take the Clyde Waterbus along the famous river to explore beyond the city or board a paddle steamer into the outer estuary from Greenock. Further down the Clyde Valley is the town of Paisley, which gave its name to the distinctive pattern, and is home to a magnificent 12th century Abbey. To the north and west is some of Scotland’s most beautiful scenery –Loch Lomond and the Trossachs are Scotland’s first National Park
The main tourist period is from April through September with the height of the season during the school holidays in July and August when accommodation, be it campsites, B&Bs or luxury hotels, is at its busiest. Every June, it hosts the International Jazz Festival and Celtic Connections – the world’s largest winter festival of Celtic music and culture takes place in January.
